高橋由一 文政１１年－明治２７年 江戸生まれ
『日本武尊』 明治２４年作 東京藝術大学大学美術館所蔵
精密で写実的な画風です。
幼児の頃から画を学んでいましたが、本格的に油彩を学び始めたのは江戸の最末期です。当時横浜に住んでいたイギリス人ワーグマンに師事した時で、その時、由一はすでに３８歳でした。
