明治９年、工学部美術学校に入学し、フォンタネージュに師事します。同１３年にはイタリアへ留学し、ローマ美術学校で学びました。
東京大学工学部、東京高等工芸学校、東京美術学校で後進の指導に当たり、東京高等工芸学校校長を長くつとめ、美術教育の発展に寄与しました。
